WHR - (Waist Hip Ratio) Calculator
Why is it good to know WHR?The newest studies suggest that various diseases are not only caused by obesity itself but also by its type. Especially dangerous for health is fat tissue distributed in the abdominal region. To determine the layout of the fat tissue we need (Waist/Hip Ratio = WHR). The value is interpreted differently with men and women, because of natural anatomic differences.
The type of obesity - how does it influence our health?Obesity is mainly divided into two types:
- Abdominal type - (apple shape, androidal, masculine) - seen mostly with men, than women and with women past menopause. It is more dangerous for health, since it increases the risk of cardiovascular problems, hypertension and diabetes. Abdominal obesity is recognized when waist is higher than 102 cm for men and 88 cm for women
- hips, thighs, and buttocks obesity type (pear shape) - seen mostly with women with fat tissue accumulated In the hip and thigh area, not so risky for health.
To determine the distribution of fat tissue, besides measuring waist, we use also WHR index.
How to measure hip and waist circumference? This measurement is done in a standing up position with arms down, therefore it is essential to do it with the help of somebody else.
Hip circumference measurement
- Ladies - we measure the hip circumference at its widest part,
- Men - we measure it from the top part if the thigh bone.
Waist circumference measurement
- Ladies - Measured midway between the lower rib margin and the iliac crest,
- Men - measured at the naval level.
Proper values of WHR and health - interpretationWHR index shows the type of obesity
The standard WHR should be :
- For women - 0.71 to 0.85
- For men - from 0.78 - 0.94
Higher ratio means apple type obesity, which can lead to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, coronary disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension.
Lower ratio means pear type obesity, which is less risky for the health.
WHR and attractiveness for both women and menScientists have discovered that the waist-hip ratio (WHR) is a significant factor in judging female attractiveness. Women with a 0.7 WHR (waist circumference that is 70% of the hip circumference) are usually rated as more attractive by men from European cultures. Such diverse beauty icons as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and even the Venus de Milo all have or had ratios close to 0.7, even though they all have different weights and heights.
