The onion is not fully appreciated plant should find its fixed place in menus because of its therapeutic significance. Its chemical constitution is the reason for which it may be a true panacea in treatment of a number of diseases associated with the progress of civilisation. Onion contains protein, sugar, small amounts of fat, vitamins of group B, C and A, as well as flavonoids. A close relative of onion is garlic, which, alike the first one, reduces blood cholesterol level and additionally, due to the allicin content, shows antibacterial and antimycotic properties.
Another vegetable that deserves attention is celery. In folk medicine of the Far East countries, it has been used in treatment of arterial hypertension so far, probably because of a substance, which has been discovered not long ago, that loosens blood vessel.
It is also worth looking more carefully at asparagus, which is rich in folic acid and vitamin C. It is a natural diuretic substance and lately it has been more and more frequently said to have an antivirus effect.
