Snails are among the foods which haven’t yet become popular at our tables. Eating them properly may be troublesome. So, how should they be eaten?

Snails are often used as an appetiser and is served at tables with herbs and garlic butter which is rather served with white bread.

Snails are especially valued in the French cuisine and they’re often served as an appetiser. They can be served at your table with herbs and garlic butter, but there are also well-known recipes for snails in hot sauces or casseroled with juicy tomatoes; they can also be served with white bread. Apart from eating them in restaurants, you can buy snails in shops, either frozen or ready to eat.

  1. They are served in their shells, on a little pan with depressions, which makes it easier for them to stay put. Usually a portion consists of 6 snails.
  2. Snails are served piping hot, so you should hold the shells with special tongs.
  3. Remove the shell’s contents with a little thin fork. Snails are rather slimy and this isn’t an easy task.
  4. You can eat the snails with a herb sauce, biting off a bit of bread in between each mouthful, or by placing the snail in pieces on the bread (baguette), and eating them together.
  5. The dish is quite fatty, so consume them in a delicate manner. Being careful not to stain your clothes or the tablecloth.
  6. Enjoy the flavour. Snails, just like prawns, or any other dishes which require some work when eating, are worth the effort.
