How many calories in fats

Fats in moderate amounts are an indispensable food element for people. They are the main source of glycerol and fatty acids, from which the body synthesizes other lipids. However, eating too many fatty products – especially the saturated ones – increases the risk of circulatory diseases and causes obesity.

Nutritious values in fatsFats play an important role in nutrition, both those of vegetable origin (canola, soya, sunflower) and those of animal origin (lard, cod-liver oil) because they contain valuable nutrients. Many vitamins only dissolve in fats; which are also a main source of the necessary unsaturated fatty acids that are the basis of a healthy diet. Some fatty acids also take part in tissue hormone synthesis i.e. prostaglandins.
Fats and healthy food Elderly people need fewer fats, as their bodies work slower and the unfavourable changes do not avoid the alimentary canal; the food is digested slower and for longer. It’s then worth getting to know the nutrition specialist’s recommendations included in the food pyramid for seniors.
Tips for storing fats Fats should be stored in the fridge or in a cool and dark place. Butter, margarine and lard should be stored in a tightly closed glass or stoneware container – fats absorb fragrances quite quickly. Fresh butter should maintain its properties for as long as the expiration date, but storing it for a longer period of time outside of the fridge can lead to spoiling. Olive oil and other oils should be stored in temperatures of 6-7oC for 2-3 months.
