Etiquette at the table

Good manners, education and culture are all well-known concepts, which still have not lost their meaning over time. It’s still important to understand etiquette, whether it may be at a business meeting, or at dinner with friends. Good manners are not only artificial rituals handed down to us by past époques, which celebrated conventions. There is a skill of the appropriate behaviour in every situation, deriving itself from tradition, yet which is very practical and incredibly useful in the modern world. It’s not only a knowledge of savoir vivre, but also the ability to use it with flexibility.
Why do we need etiquette at the table?
The impression we make on others at common meals often influences the way we’re perceived and valued; it also influences further inter-personal relations. On the other hand, if we know the rules for appropriate behaviour at the table, we gain more confidence and flair. If we’re confused by which fork or knife is designed for which dish, or how to eat so called “difficult dishes”, we’re not able to concentrate on conversation topics and may feel lost. Therefore, it’s worth enriching our knowledge of table etiquette, in order to avoid embarrassing situations, to feel confident with other people and to strengthen our feeling of self-worth.
A cultured man’s behaviour
Good manners at a party or dinner are connected with elegance, greeting others according to rules of seniority, and the ability to seat guests at a properly prepared and decorated table. This is also connected with serving dishes according to etiquette, the right choice of wine and making conversation according to “rules” of savoir vivre.
In the past and nowadays In the past the rules applied at the table were very strict, but times are changing and codes of good manners are changing too. Yet some rules are still followed, therefore it is good both to recognise and remember them.
