Erwtensoep - called also Snert - very popular soup of green shelled peas.
Product description
Usually the Dutch prepare it in winter when the need for a solid meal is greater. Snert is a soup, thick in consistency, often served with pork or sausage. The Dutch say that a good pea soup is the one in which a tablespoon can stand on its own.

Ingredients
1 cup of shelled green peas
500 g pork shoulder
500 g rich ham or rich smoked sausage
2 litres of water
4 finely diced onion
1 chopped celery
4 peeled and cubed potatoes
1 parsley
1 teaspoon salt
Preparation
- Pour water over peas and let stand covered for 8-10 hours.
- Drain and put in a pot with salty water , add pork.
- Cook on low heat for about 3 hours.
- Add onions, celery, parsley and cook for additional half and hours, stirring occasionally
- At the end add ham or sausage and cook for 10 minutes more.
- Remove ham or sausage and slice them.
- Place the sliced ham or sausage back in the soup
Serving:Serve in a big plate, best with dark bread, and traditional Dutch sauce. The meat from the soup is served on bread with mustard.
