How many calories are there in....?
At times we need to have information about the caloric contents in various products or product groups. How many calories are there in vegetables, fruit, favourite snacks and non-alcoholic drinks? Such knowledge will be useful as it may be worth it to replace our favourite chips with fresh vegetables with tasty yoghurt based dips.

Let’s consider if it’s worthwhile calculating calories. Is there any point counting the calories in the meals we prepare? Of course there is, as everyone has different daily caloric needs. But it’s not only about calories. In order to fully utilise our developmental potential, our diet has to be rich in various foods that will include the right amounts of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals.
Proteins play a crucial part in all our life processes and are a component of each living cell. It’s thanks to them that our bodies have balanced hormones, immunity to infections and properly functioning digestive systems. We shouldn’t forget about the carbohydrates in our diets, as they allow the body to use proteins properly and are necessary in burning fats.
Fats, on the other hand, are essential in our bodies due to vitamins A, D, E and K, which dissolve in them.
Since our bodies cannot produce vitamins on their own, it is necessary to provide them daily through our food. It is very important, since vitamins are crucial for the body’s proper functions and some of them are responsible for growth. Another important element in our diets is minerals which serve as builders and they also fulfil a regulatory function.
What is our caloric need dependant on? The answer is simple…on our physiology. Just by itself it regulates the body’s needs and caloric intake, depending on our age, type of work, gender or general living conditions. It’s obvious that nourishment standards are different in the diet for elderly people to that of the diet for students, since their lifestyles are incomparable. A similar situation takes place in the case of women expecting a child, who should know all about the proper nourishment for pregnant women.
All the cuisines of the world pay special attention to the necessity of calculating calories and using rational nourishment. Despite various ways of providing the body with food, everybody can or at least try to balance their meals properly. As an example we can take the Italian cuisine which is suited to nearly all tastes. Thanks to its diversity and the richness of its flavours, it’s generally considered one of the world’s best cuisines and still it’s so different from the Japanese cuisine. This is considered to be natural, harmonic and the world’s healthiest.
Therefore we apply the calorie charts, because it’s thanks to our knowledge relating to the energetic value in meals that we know about nutritious values. So, we can make changes to our diets, the ones that will provide us with the energy and essential nutrients we require.
If, additionally, we manage to gain the silhouette we’ve always dreamt about, there will be further benefits from it.
