Beet

Strong bones, healthy teeth
Eating beets may be beneficial for our bones and teeth as they contain calcium, deficiency of which may lead to plaque disease, rickets, osteoporosis and growth impairment in children.

All of today’s varieties come from the wild beet growing in the Far East and in India. The first mention of the beet is found in Babylonia. It was highly valued by ancient Greeks who used it when paying homage to Apollo. At first only leaves were being eaten while the root was used for medicinal purposes. In 14th century beet cultivation spreads to northern Europe. At the time of Napoleon I the expansion of the sugar beet took place, currently the second source of sugar after sugar cane. The beet is the basic ingredient of borsch – the cult soup of Eastern Europe.
