The American cuisine owes its variety to Red Indian and African as well as European and Asian immigrants’ influences. In different regions, the influence shaping the culinary culture has been made by the ethnic groups that have settled there. Additionally the country’s vastness has added to the diversity of the American cuisine.
Fast food
Undoubtedly what is immediately linked to the American cuisine are its fast foods, which are distant from the celebrated culinary customs. If we follow this track, we recall the most popular American meals, such as hot dogs, hamburgers or buffalo wings.
These dishes are popular today all over the world, being accessible in most countries. The American cuisine is associated most of all with fast foods, that are quite calorific and not always healthy, and the US style of serving and eating food is related to a fast, not particularly nourishing dish away from home, as a quick lunch break.
Vegetables on the table
On the other hand, the traditional soups, cakes, marinades, or salads that combine vegetables and fruit are also part of the American culture. We cannot omit the importance of vegetables such as sweet corn and pumpkins. Sweet corn is served in many forms, being an integral part of many dishes, as well as an additional vegetable. World famous are corn on the cob, served with butter and salt, popcorn, or corn dogs – sausages covered with corn dough, everything is deep fried.
The pumpkin’s also a special vegetable. It’s mostly associated with the Halloween celebrations of October 31st; when the US changes its colour to orange, then you can’t miss these vegetables hollowed out as lampions and put out as decorations. The most famous dishes are pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie.

American traditionDeeply rooted in the American culture are dishes like stuffed turkey, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce, served at Thanksgiving Day.
The whole family gathers at the family table for a common meal and this holiday is connected with a traditional thanksgiving prayer for the harvest. There are also many occasions to meet friends, so intrinsic to the American lifestyle, such as at barbecues, grills, or Garden Parties. You can grill anything from meats and vegetables, to fruit. American BBQ is mainly ribs and chicken wings, served with various sauces.
Salads are also popular. The most popular is Caesar Salad, with Roman lettuce and a vinaigrette, or Chef’s salad, with vegetables and a boiled egg. Another one is coleslaw with cabbage and carrots, or Waldorf salad with celery, apples and nuts. It is worth introducing interesting and healthy dishes, that are nutritious, remembering that dining is also an art, that is worth spending the time and effort on.
